Tower Rock When the Mississippi River is Low

Photos taken on November 2, 2003.

The Mississippi gets this low about once every ten years, but I've never managed to be there when it does it and walk over to Tower Rock before.

I opened the pictures up expecting to relive the almost breathless excitement I'd felt clambering around on the exposed riverbed. Looking at them, I realize that it was't what I was seeing that impressed me so much, but the awesome knowledge that I was standing on ground that belonged to the Father of Waters. But here they are anyway!

The Landbridge

This was taken partway down the bank on the way to the Rock. That splash of white on the left hand side is someone in a white shirt, to give you a bit of scale.

The River Side

The sun was already behind the Rock when I took this. I stood on the very edge of exposed rock and looked back, awed by how far into the River the bedrock extends.

Mississippi currents

I was there to view the foundations of the Rock, but I couldn't resist the roiling current on its edge.
